This was one of the topics that stood out most to me. I learned that most doctors didn't understand the need to wash their hands to prevent infections. Often the injured died from infections, rather than from the wound itself. This is a scary thought for anyone who has ever had any type of surgery! Althougth only a handful of women fought during the war, many had the same passion that drove their men to fight. Sherman said his goal was "To make Georgia howl" and that is exactly what he did. A Union soldier was also quoted saying that Sherman's army could go wherever it willed itself. Some of the most interesting quote were from Union soldiers saying that it was a great march because they got great food and a lot of royalties that normal soldiers wouldn't have got. Burns also used voices from women such as Mary Chestnut saying that Sherman would leave nothing. I think these quote about Sherman and his march are so important because it shows gradually that the south is falling apart and that there is nothing they can do to stop. In the beginning we see many quotes from both North and South saying how good of a soldier he is. Foot says that Bedford was a natural genius, while Bearss said he was the most interesting and one of the most intelligent people in the war. Sherman even states that he is brilliant but he must be stopped. Then at the end of this episode Burns brings to our attention that Bedford did have a down side, which was is racism. he was quoted saying that black soldiers aren't as good as white soldiers. There was also a quote from a black Union soldier saying that Bedford had shot him three times, and the only reason he got a way was because he played dead. i just thought it was interesting how he showed the two sides of Forrest and used both Northern and Southern opinions to show it.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"54144332","body":"That is also interesting, because we studied the NBFHS case. Everyone there remembered his racism, and argued that point. However, during and shortly after the Civil War he can be seen as an honorable man to have a school named after.
